Permanent hair removal is what people who have unwanted hair dream about. Unfortunately, because of the cost of the procedure, some settle with semi-permanent or hair reduction treatments. There is actually no hair removal treatment that really lasts for a lifetime and works for every patient. The treatments may work for some people, but other patients may not respond well at all. How the patient responds to the procedure is merely dependent on the characteristics of the person's hair and the cause of excessive hair growth.

Usually for hair removal procedures to be considered permanent, the patient should not experience any hair growth in the treated area for six months to a year after the last session.

This is because the growth cycle of the hair is completed every six months. The patient should not be doing another hair removal treatment during that time period.

Among the available hair removal methods, the only treatment proven to result in permanent hair reduction is electrolysis. It is the only procedure that has been approved by FDA to have a permanent result. However, some patients have experienced the same effects with laser hair removal. Permanent hair removal may or may not be experienced by the patient. These hair removal methods claim to have permanent results work by specifically targeting the hair follicles and disabling their function of hair growth and regrowth.

Electrolysis is a method that has been tested over time. It was first used for removing stray hairs over a hundred years ago when it was used in removing ingrown eyelash hairs. With further development over time, electrolysis can now be used in removing unwanted hair from any body part including the face, breasts, eyebrows, abdomen, thighs and legs. It has side effects, which do not last long. The patient's skin may become red during the permanent hair removal treatment or after the procedure has been conducted. The skin will return to normal after a few hours. The safety of the procedure has been proven and tested. More to that, electrolysis does not use any form of chemicals like other hair removal treatments can. The hair follicles, which are known to be the center of growth, are bombarded with a small voltage of electric current. This electric current is specifically targeted to the roots of the hair, thus the follicles are not able to produce hair growth or regrowth of new hairs. After killing the follicles with the electrical current, the hairs are removed with the insertion of a fine probe in the skin's surface. The hairs are gently pulled out with the use of forceps. Electrolysis is a very time consuming process as each hair has to be treated one by one and only a few strands can be treated at a time.

In contrast to what people expect about the process, the electrolysis treatment is not painful. With today's advancements, technology has made it possible for the process to not cause any discomfort to the patients. There may be tingling or a stinging that may be felt by some patients. This also depends on the person's pain tolerance level. Anesthesia can be applied topically in cases wherein the treated body part is sensitive. This is also great permanent hair removal for men.

There is another method of hair removal and it is known as body sugaring. This is an ancient method of hair removal that was developed in the Middle East. A paste is made by boiling sugar, water and the juice of lemons. Once it is formed it can be applied to the area where the hair is to be removed. Instead of using muslin strips, the application of sugar paste is removed by hand with a fast moving technique. The paste is like taffy and allows the trained technician to apply and rip the paste, taking the unwanted hair with it. Body sugaring is unique in that not only does it remove hairs, but it also removes all of the dead skin off that area of the body. It is the ultimate exfoliant. The technique used to remove the sugar takes practice to perfect. Also, large amounts of sugar are required for treating areas such as the legs or back. Despite all of these benefits, the hair removal is not permanent. Additional sessions will be required. With each session the hairs will come back lighter and more sparse. This is far better than permanent hair removal cream. The good thing about sugaring it is natural and a good alternative to other methods of permanent hair removal at home.

To handle the hair problem once and for all, electrolysis is recommended. This is one of the best permanent hair removal products. The hair growth cycle might take up to six months to compete and because of other factors affecting hair growth, patients will be required to return for follow up treatments. The number of sessions that the patient should complete depends on the extent of growth of unwanted hair, but once the whole treatment process is complete the hairs will be gone forever.
